TRAINING

For the date of the next course please contact the co-ordinator

The two most important pieces of equipment carried by the First Responders is a defibrillator and an Oxygen cylinder .  In Essex the First Responders carry a lightweight portable semi-automatic machine known as the Laerdal Hearstart ® Defibrillator. If the Responder suspects cardiac arrest he/she places two defibrillator pads on the patent's chest, switches on the machine, views the LCD screen and follows the voice prompts.  The volunteers also learn emergency life support. We are also taught how to administer Medical Oxygen to patients.

Volunteers are also given instruction on how to approach an incident and deal with relatives and /or bystanders.  Practical and written examinations are set to ensure the First Responders are fully equipped with the necessary skills needed to help save a life.  Regular training and refresher sessions are conducted by experienced paramedics usually every 6 months.  The responders are also given an insight into the Criteria Based Dispatch system, used at ambulance control.

Once training has been successfully completed all volunteers are required to complete a Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) form, checking for previous convictions and will only join the rota once this has been cleared.
